Title: Death Note [SPOILERS]
Description: Please watch current episode b4 clicking
BlueRush - June 20, 2007 03:41 AM (GMT)

Death Note is a really, really great manga. If you know me, you know I completely love FMA, to the extent that I've read and seen everything there was to see for it (except for the Lujon episode ;_;) Well, this manga is quickly edging out FMA for my favorite manga.
Death Note is a fascinating, suspense-filled game of wits that kept me on the edge of my seat... which is where I am now!
A "Death Note" is a notebook. Left by a shinigami, if a human picks it up and the notebook has no current owner, that shinigami follows that human. If you write a name in that notebook, while thinking of that person's face, that person will die within 40 seconds. There are more rules, but that's the basics.
The person who has the notebook in this manga chooses to use it to kill criminals... convicted criminals. He will reform the world by silently delivering the final punishment on anyone who commits an atrocious crime.
It doesn't take long for people to realize this is no coincidence. They call this mysterious, faceless killer "Kira"-- and the greatest detective in world, who works under the alias "L" is asked to apprehend him.
How can L capture a criminal who can kill from across the world, leaving no evidence?
How can Kira kill a detective whose name and face are hidden from the world?
I'm not doing it justice here. It's frickin' awesome, a thrill ride of greatness. Two things!
Do not research this on Wikipedia. If you decide to read this, and if you intend to go very far, reading past the first character introduction on the wiki is a mistake. There are so many twists and turns, pretty much everything there is a spoiler you'll regret.
These characters would be near-impossible to RP with. :(
Given the always-moving plot of this RP, it'd be tough to say "I'll play this character" because they do change. Also, the setup of the manga makes it tough for stuff like that: imagine a character with that kind of power, for example, in SW2; it wouldn't be very fair.
(smurf order)
Yagami Light

Finder of the Death Note, what will he do with it??
L
?
???
Amane Misa

Spoilers... but... I can tell you she's in love with Light, and that's she's a semi-famous actress! Misamisa-chaaaan
Plus more...
If you choose to use a character in an RP,
I'd really appreciate it if you PMed me first, because I am planning to *try* to insert a character or two into an RP or two. :3

Probably most of you won't go for this very much... but it's been keeping me enthralled. ^_^
DBOZGT - June 20, 2007 03:48 AM (GMT)
Never Heard of it is it good series?
BlueRush - June 20, 2007 03:53 AM (GMT)
YES!
It is like a suspense novel... but a manga! Two geniuses, pitting their wits against one another... to keep track of it, you have to think and keep things in order... and even though I'm always keeping up, always guessing what'll happen... but they surprise me every time! It's great!
Dark Phazon - June 20, 2007 04:06 AM (GMT)
I've heard a lot about how good this series is supposed to be, though I never got around to watching it yet. And considering how many things I'm currently into, it may be a while before I get around to watching it. Plus I haven't really been watching much lately, anyway, with all types of other stuff to do, as well as dailymotion not always having what I want to watch in a language I know (though I finally finished Buso Renkin a week or so ago)... But still, eventually, I may watch it!!
Also, I believe Kimiko is somewhat into the series (or at least, made a drawing about the Death Note paper itself, a while ago).
Also also, I do have to say, considering the characters you usually come up with for RPs, BR, it kinda makes sense to me that you'd really like this series, with the whole good/evil conflict and stuff.
DBOZGT - June 20, 2007 04:25 AM (GMT)
Death Note.... Good Series.......
Well I wont have time for a while I got a lot of Anime to catch up too.

Bohahaha! XD I do love it! They really get you rooting for both sides...
All right! :D I hope Kimi sees this and tells me what she knows! Or something??
Interestingly, I read manga almost exclusively (I've only watched FMA anime, really, though I've seen a lot of Outlaw Star, some of DBZ, and a good chunk of Bleach) but I think you, DP, seem to watch anime almost exclusively, as opposed to reading manga. Would that be correct?
Dark Phazon - June 20, 2007 05:18 AM (GMT)
The only manga I've read a fair amount of was Bleach, from after the SS arc, so yeah, I'm mostly an anime person.
Kimiko - June 20, 2007 06:34 AM (GMT)
Yes yes yes!!! I absolutely ADORE Death Note!!! :D ADORE.
The manga kinda scares me, but like, in the good way that books are SUPPOSED to scare you... but I still stick to the anime most of the time... Light's funneh, over-exagerrated movements while writing in the Death Note... just XD
...But I skip the opening sequence... that scares me, too. XD
Anyhoo... Yea! Death Note is teh super special awesome. You should all read it and buy the toys and blah blah :D Cuz it's awesome.
BlueRush - June 20, 2007 06:39 AM (GMT)
Hooray! For Death Note fans. :D
OK, I will check the anime out! ^_^ After I finish the manga, though.
Yes! It is so completely awesome!
Dark Phazon - June 23, 2007 03:29 AM (GMT)
After one episode... I think this series is a bit too dark for my tastes... Though I will watch a couple more episodes tommorow, just to make sure of my final opinion...
BlueRush - June 23, 2007 04:40 AM (GMT)
X_X; Where are you finding the episodes?
Also the manga isn't very dark... *heavy*, as in not a lot of comedy, but I wouldn't say "dark."
GoldenSama - June 23, 2007 04:55 AM (GMT)
If you have a link to anime or manga that's online, I'll watch/read.
I don't buy manga unless I know I'll like it... I've wasted too much money buying manga that turns out to be something I don't like.

GoldenSama - June 23, 2007 05:20 AM (GMT)
DP is very awesome indeed. :3
BlueRush - June 23, 2007 05:29 AM (GMT)
Manga link at bottom of first post. Manga's the original, and probably better... <.< Though I'm probably biased...
There was also a live-action movie! XD
Thanks DP! ^_^ *watches*
EDIT!
1. Warning! X_X; Apparently, there is yaoi garbage-- sorry if I offend anyone-- going around that is definitely not implied in the manga. ><; Please avoid it and only concentrate on the positive aspects!
I'd say something along the lines of "not that there's anything wrong with that," but there IS something wrong with butchering a perfectly good manga. good DAY sir
2.
This little comic should explain some things. And raise more questions! XD3.

Well, I think I'll be able to effortlessly get into this series now that it's coming to Adult Swim pretty soon. :D
Dark Phazon - September 25, 2007 03:52 AM (GMT)
I am saddened by this development, since it happens to be replacing Bleach in the schedule right when the Bleach anime gets into it's best part.
Clown Prince of Crime - September 25, 2007 03:56 AM (GMT)
Wait, so they're going to stop showing Bleach? Hmmm... that does seem kinda dumb. There's several other shows that are only on reruns that they could replace... :/
Dark Phazon - October 21, 2007 04:01 AM (GMT)
Anyway... for those who want to see the series in english, it's starting about right now on adult swim.

>:3 Get used to that feeling.
I still think the manga's better, but I think that about all animes I've seen, so... ^^;
Hey, I'll be tuning into this! You should too! Anything BR likes better than FMA had better be good, right?
Clown Prince of Crime - October 28, 2007 08:06 AM (GMT)
Just saw the second episode. Wow... that was amazing! Everything is handled in such a way that... just wow. And the whole thing with L... man, this is just... wow...

This is definitely more of a thinking-person's series.

I find that incredibly refreshing! Oh, man, I'm already loving this series! Honestly, I wasn't expecting it to be anything like this! :w00t:
EDIT: Wha happen? D... did they not show Death Note tonight? o_O
EDIT 2: Nevermind... Daylight Savings...

Still not quite a fan of the subject matter (or something along those lines, I guess), but yeah, this series is quite awesome.

And I love homework!!! On Fridays and Saturdays. Yay papers.
"Still not quite a fan of the subject matter"... you mean that you're not a fan of the subject matter, being that the subject matter is, like, I dunno, mass genocide perpetuated by an arrogant high-schooler with a God complex and a penchant for seducing women and using them as tools? XD What's not to like??
Seriously, though: taking such an unsavory, horrible topic and making something like this out of it is an acheivement. :D
Clown Prince of Crime - November 11, 2007 09:36 AM (GMT)
Well, I can't say I like Light as a person, but I do like him as a character. And tonight's episode was so awesome! Especially when Light tricked the bus jacker into touching a piece of paper from the Death Note. That part was intense!

I think so. Kind-of. It might be how he's just playing with lives, though that is also what made the last episode so awesome. I dunno. There's "something" I don't like about it that I can't put my finger on, but I also find it quite awesome. Yay for the conundrum that is the way my mind works.
Sailor N - November 11, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
I don't like Death Note. Serisously, I watched an episode of it, and Light scares me.
BlueRush - November 11, 2007 06:47 PM (GMT)
This is exactly the draw of Death Note! You are meant to be disgusted, to be scared, to be alienated by the inhumanity of Raito; you are meant to hunger for justice against his bratty little soul. But then... there's some kind of attraction to his character, something that keeps you empathsizing with him, blaming the book, hoping he'll repent...
...or maybe, just maybe, as Raito himself suggests, underneath the disgust you feel on the surface is a hidden belief that his work is right... you might feel that what he is doing may be placing his judgement before that of God, but that the justice system itself and every person who has ever fought for peace through annihilation of his enemies has done the same. You might think what he is doing is needed, required, that he is going farther than anyone else dared; you might think the desire for a perfect world through the destruction of the evil is a good thing, but feel pity for his flawed methodology.
What's the deal with his promise to Ryuk at the beginning of all this? Is he offering himself as a sacrifice for the world? Or just trying to get enjoyment out of all this?
Whatever the answer, whatever your answer, this manganime is frickin' brilliant. It should make you uneasy, because it should make you question yourself, and what you believe is right. Hah hah! "Right", like "Light"!
ALSO: Spoilers. It's really, really easy to spoil people for this series. ^^; You have to work really hard to avoid spoilers. But if I guess you guys are watching the anime as it comes out, discussing the current episode shouldn't be too spoilerific, right?
anyway, according to Wiki

Belgian murder On September 28, 2007, two notes stating "Watashi wa Kira dess" (I am Kira, with "desu" being the more literal and correct transliteration of the verb) were found near the unidentified remains of a Caucasian male. Nothing was found on or near the victim besides these two notes. Belgian police are investigating the matter further.[27][28] |
woah snap

You certainly have thought a lot about this series...
As for spoilers/similar, unless there are others who don't want this, I won't discuss things that have happened until at least 3 hours after the episode I saw them in (to account for time-zone differences), if I'm going to discuss about the series.

I think I can kinda understand what you mean. Ya, Light is a very disturbing and frightening individual... not exactly someone I can really think of as a "good guy". In fact, I would only consider him the protagonist and nothing more, as I really don't share his "ethics". Still, this really is a great series, even though there is that certain something about it that can tend to make a person very uneasy. It's a refreshing change of pace, I think. It's not an action show, it's very definitely more of an intellectual thriller, I guess you could call it. It's a psychological show.
EDIT: HOLY CRAP!! 3 Ninja posts in a row! O_o

I must say, with every episode, this gets more awesome and more awesome.
Clown Prince of Crime - November 18, 2007 08:24 AM (GMT)
No kidding. Too bad I got home pretty late tonight, so I only saw the second half of tonight's episode! >.<
Though, yes, this is such a GREAT series! Rather than most of the somewhat mindless action anime that's on Adult Swim, this is a very nice thought-provoking series.
I must say, though, that as much as I keep liking Light more and more as a character, the more and more I hate him as a person! XD
EDIT: Okay, after watching tonight's episode, it's official... I can safely say that I'm constantly rooting AGAINST the main character. Light Yagami has crossed the line several episodes ago and he's only getting worse. I want him brought to justice.
Dark Phazon - November 25, 2007 12:16 PM (GMT)

I have no idea where you guys are, or if the anime directly mirrors the manga... but I do remember wanting him brought to justice. In addition to rooting against him for that reason, though, I also just missed Raito's humanity... I rooted against him, for his own sake... And then there were the times when I rooted for him, due in part to his searing brilliance. Completely sweet, wonderful, punishable brilliance. But poor Misa! Light, where did you compassion go...? Seriously, Raito/Light is a great character... <3

I guess the Death Note has driven him insane.
