Title: Sonic X-Treme... Coming Soon?
Description: Knowing the sources, I doubt it, but...

Avenger29 - July 8, 2007 06:25 AM (GMT)
http://www.sonicstadium.org/sonicnews/299/

I'm sure you all saw that scrolling across the screen today, but if you didn't, I'll give you the gist of the article.

One of the more famous Sonic hackers, HXC, has somehow acquired a copy of a beta version of the infamously scrapped Sonic X-Treme, and is planning to release it on July 18th via BitTorrent download.

Now, given the sources that the story lists (CulT; S2Beta), and knowing the stunt that those creeps at CulT pulled last year, I'm kinda finding this hard to believe. Still, if its real, and I sincerely hope it is, it'll be one of the greatest finds in Sonic research history since the finding of the beta version of Sonic 2.

So, your thoughts? Do you guys think its another hoax? Or is CulT actually doing something good for a change? (I shudder at the thought of me putting "Sonic CulT" and "good" in the same sentence.)

Clown Prince of Crime - July 8, 2007 06:40 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure what to say, really... but if it is indeed true, that would be pretty cool. From the video that was shown, Sonic X-Treme sure did have a promising start... it's just too bad it never became fully realized.

Avenger29 - July 8, 2007 06:45 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I seriously hope its true. I'd love to play it.

My question is this: Will it run as a PC game? Or will I need to have a Saturn emulator?

Clown Prince of Crime - July 8, 2007 06:58 AM (GMT)
My guess is the latter, but to be quite honest, I don't have the slightest clue. O_o You've brought up a very good point there, Avenger...

Avenger29 - July 8, 2007 07:50 AM (GMT)
I seriously hope it'll be a PC game instead of in Saturn format. I'd rather not waste my time trying to find a good Saturn emu, especially if they're as hard to find as a good DC one. I just wanna play, you know?

tinmanti - July 8, 2007 12:31 PM (GMT)
Woo! Finally! I'll be able to play the game (that is, if it's for real...).
Lets just hope it's not a hoax.
About the whole emulator thing, I'm sure theres gotta be someone on the SRB who could tell us where to get a good one for the saturn.

Master Pogi - July 9, 2007 06:44 PM (GMT)
Hmmm, I'm not sure about this. But it would be very cool though, if it is true, I already have a Torrent client ready for it! ^__^

Clown Prince of Crime - July 9, 2007 07:20 PM (GMT)
Well, I'm curious how far Sega got in making the game before canning it... from what I saw in that video in the link, it may only be one level... one incomplete level... heck, there weren't even any sound effects when Sonic jumped or collected rings.

This seems like it could be pretty good from a research point of view, though.

tinmanti - July 9, 2007 07:41 PM (GMT)
Hmm... I see ya point. Well, at least it should be good to study from. We may find why sega canned it (i.e. it could suck XD)
Anyways, it should still be fun to try out.

BlueRush - July 10, 2007 03:26 AM (GMT)
What did Sonic CuLt or whatevs do wrong? Heard of 'em, but that's all.

Isn't this the game with "Tiara Boobowski"? XD And we wonder why they canned it?

Yeah, I'll probably be playing this one.

Clown Prince of Crime - July 10, 2007 03:42 AM (GMT)
Yes, it is... and that was a very unfortunate name for a character. :heh:

Maybe if they had left out one of the Os...

GoldenSama - July 10, 2007 05:02 AM (GMT)
Hmm... unfortunate name choices aside, I suspect they canned it for a simple reason: Monies.

Sometimes, when a series does well (like Sonic) they take on more projects than they can accomplish. They probably realized they were stretching their developers too thin and couldn't afford to hire extra ones (at least, extras who would be qualified) so they canned the game. :/

OR someone on the design team got into a argument with someone else.

I dunno. Those things have been known to happen, though.

Clown Prince of Crime - July 10, 2007 05:04 AM (GMT)
That first thing you said seems pretty valid, GS. Afterall, the Saturn didn't do anywhere near as well as Sega had hoped... and since this was supposed to be THE Sonic game for the Saturn...

tailsonic15 - July 10, 2007 05:47 AM (GMT)
I had the Sega Saturn! It was good.

I wish I still had it though...

Avenger29 - July 10, 2007 06:54 AM (GMT)
Sonic CulT... They're not even fans. And they're incredibly inappropriate. They don't even belong on the internet at all.

And yeah, Ms. Boobowski was supposed to be in this game! Anyways, if it's real, I seriously cannot wait. Its gonna rock.

tinmanti - July 10, 2007 05:33 PM (GMT)
I'm really excited about this (almost as much as when Sonic Crackers hit the net)! I wonder what it will be like...
Anyways, what did Sonic CulT do to make you hate them so much? There must have been something that happened.

GoldenSama - July 11, 2007 04:05 PM (GMT)
Ahh! Good point Spoony!

I completely forgot this was a Saturn game!

Yes... unfortunately, Saturn didn't work out like they'd hoped. Perhaps it wasn't that they stretched their designers too thin, but maybe when the Saturn sales weren't what they hoped they decided to delay the Sonic project until they had more sales... but that didn't happen so they had to scrap the idea.

We can speculate the exact circumstances for years without truly knowing, but one thing I know to be true: Delayed games are usually because of money. >_<

Avenger29 - July 11, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
Like I said, TI, they're all arrogant, inappropriate jerks. I mean, they posted porn in a news story once! And they don't even care about the Sonic games. They just bash them.

Clown Prince of Crime - July 11, 2007 07:25 PM (GMT)
Hmmm... I'll admit, that doesn't sound very good. Not good at all. >_o Though, if all they ever do is bash Sonic games, what kind of fans are they?

Kinda reminds me of a particular message board I used to be a member of... in fact, some others here were members there, too... it was a message board about the Teen Titans animated series, except the admin of that place would always bash a new episode when it came out... seriously, how can you be a fan of something if all you ever do is say negative things about it? <_<

GoldenSama - July 11, 2007 07:47 PM (GMT)
Some people refuse to look at the good in new things. They get so devoted to the "classics" that they hate everything new and have to spread that hate with bashing. >_<

Personally, while I admit many times series make mistakes as time goes on and they do things I don't particuarly like, it's no reason to be so negative. Look at the good things in new episodes/games and enjoy it! ^^

To be honest, all I really did on R/S was promote my fanfic and RP. XD I never really interacted with the Staff except for the one girl who was in the RPs. So I didn't pay attention to if they were jerks or not; but I have had enough forum experience to know how many people are online. >_<

Don't get me started about the Digimon site where I first joined this crazy series of tubes we call interweb...

Anyway, way off topic, you're right to dislike that site if they're such jerks, and this game was canned because of money. XD

Avenger29 - July 11, 2007 10:23 PM (GMT)
Exactly! No, the 3D games aren't as good as the 2D ones, but honestly, in my opinion at least, no game released since then HAS been as good as the old Sonics! To this day, Sonic 2 is STILL my favorite game of all time. These dirtbags don't even give the new games a chance.

My point is this: Yes, the 3D games do have a few flaws, such as repetitive level design and rather bland graphics (except for Nextgen, of course.), but they're still really, really fun. Heroes, Shadow, and Nextgen were all drastically underrated.

Clown Prince of Crime - July 11, 2007 10:40 PM (GMT)
Yes, especially Heroes and Shadow!

So, back on the topic at hand... do you know if there were any other new characters (besides Tiara) that were to be introduced in this game? Or perhaps what any other old characters, besides Sonic, if any, were going to be in this game?

Really... my knowledge of this game is limited. I only know about Tiara and the fact that the levels were more akin to classic Sonic than what we would end up seeing in Sonic Adventure.

Avenger29 - July 11, 2007 10:45 PM (GMT)
Well, I'm fairly certain that Tails was supposed to be in it, though I can't say for sure.

tinmanti - July 12, 2007 06:22 PM (GMT)
Hmm... so thats why you hated them so much.
Anyways, onto the topic...
I'm almost certain that Metal was gonna be in it (btw, sorry about calling him metal, it's a force of habbit :heh: ) as the main antagonist (bad guy).
I also think that Tiara's father was gonna be in it as well but I may have read wrong.
P.S. I personally loved Shadow the Hedgehog and can't understand why hardly anyone liked it (also, to anyone who hasn't played Secret rings... it is BRILLIANT! Just wanted to share that with you guys ^_^ ).

Clown Prince of Crime - July 12, 2007 06:32 PM (GMT)
I call him Metal, too. It's shorter than Metal Sonic and I'm lazy. XD

Hmmm... though I never heard that he was gonna be in this game, but that is interesting, nonetheless.

Btw, I liked Shadow the Hedgehog a lot, too. I also couldn't understand why so many people hated it. The only thing that bugged me was some of the voices, but those voices kept coming back in every game afterward... however, I've heard that won't be the case for much longer. ^_^

Avenger29 - July 12, 2007 06:48 PM (GMT)
I didn't like the overuse of the D-Bomb in Shadow, and the swords and turrets were useless, but all in all, I loved Shadow!

And I think everyone who has watched the Sonic movie calls him Metal. I know I do! (For the record, that movie rocked out loud.)

Anyways, the big day is drawing near. I can't wait!

Dark Phazon - July 12, 2007 07:01 PM (GMT)
Metal Sonic was supposed to be in that game (hold on until I find the site that has some pictures of him in it). I've heard that Fang/Nack (whatever his his "games" name) was supposed to be in it, but I'm not sure if it was from that site, or from hearing it here. :heh:

Never played the Shadow game, and with me not being a big Shadow fan, not liking the gunner levels from the Adventure games at all, the many not-that-great reviews of it, and how it seems to be far away from the style I like in Sonic games, I don't plan on playing it.

I have played Heroes, and here's all I'll say about it: I love the Power Plant theme, and it's nice that Metal Sonic (especially of that design) was in it...

Sonic Cult is Serious Business. Kinda reminds me of the old UnMod from OCR a little bit, looking at it. Kinda funny and entertaining to read, but definitely following the warning on the "enter" page is a must. And I can see how that style of site can make some people really unhappy with it.

R/S shirine. I remember winning a banner contest there AGES ago when they still were on Proboards, though I never really posted there too much. Way too busy there, with not that much in the way of interesting topics back then. Rejoined the .com one last year to help in promoting an AMV contest that got way too complicated once there were more than 6 entries. But generally, I've never really been there.

And now, off to find where I saw about Metal Sonic in Xtreme...

EDIT: BAM! A bunch of screens can be found there. And a whole lot more info (including the page I linked for Metal Sonic) about Xtreme can be found here (and that is the site where I heard about Nack being in it, too).

tinmanti - July 12, 2007 07:03 PM (GMT)
Good to know I'm not the only lazy person round here
If you go onto the Secrets of Sonic Team website it has an image of metal sonic in the 3D model section of sonic x - Treme. There is also a section deaditcated to the metal sonic boss stage on the sonic x - treme. Also from reading this I have found that Nack / Fang was set to make a return. There is a section in there called Nack the weasel boss stage which shows that Nack / Fang was also gonna make an aperance.
Good to know that there was someone else who liked Shadow the Hedgehog apart from me ^_^
EDIT: P.S. I did love that movie. A bit on the short side though. I also heard some rummors going around that there was gonna be a new sonic movie for 2009. Don't think it was true though.
EDIT AGAIN: Oh, you've posted some links to the pages. Don't mind me :heh: sorry.

QUOTE (Dark Phazon @ Jul 12 2007, 12:01 PM)
...Fang/Nack (whatever his his "games" name)...

Well, the thing about that character's name goes like this.

In Japan, he was a wolf whose name was Fang the Sniper.

In the U.S. and Europe, he was a half-wolf, half-weasel whose name was Nack the Weasel.

As for his inclusion in this game... I find that most interesting. Yes, indeed, very interesting. It's my hope that Fang will make it into the upcoming Sonic RPG... if ever there were a good excuse to bring all the retro characters back...

But, ya, from those screenshots, it looks like this game was further along in development than I thought! o.o

tinmanti - July 12, 2007 08:11 PM (GMT)
Thats strange cause I seem to use the name Fang more often that Nack. Why was he Fnag the 'Sniper'?

Clown Prince of Crime - July 12, 2007 08:16 PM (GMT)
Cuz he was a gun for hire. For the right price, he'd rub someone out. Hence why he calls himself a sniper. Add to that the fact that he has VERY good aim.

tinmanti - July 12, 2007 08:21 PM (GMT)
Oh, so thats why. I knew he was a bounty hunter but didn't realise he had brilliant aim.
I really hope they bring him back in the new sonic rpg. He had (and still has) so much potential.

Avenger29 - July 17, 2007 07:38 AM (GMT)
Well, its released. Has anybody played it yet? I'm downloading it right now.

Oh, and you WILL need an emulator for Saturn to play it.

tinmanti - July 17, 2007 07:49 PM (GMT)
Ah crud. Know any good emu's 4 the saturn? That would really help. Thanks mate.
