Well, this makes all the recent characters Sega's been constantly adding to the series more useful...

...

Though I have to say, this could be quite interesting (as long as they keep crap like time travel out of it).

tailsonic15 - June 22, 2007 02:50 AM (GMT)
Woo! SONIC RPG!!!

and yea, time travel is bad

GoldenSama - June 22, 2007 04:14 AM (GMT)
:3

I've always wanted this.

I need to go jump for joy. :D

Crystal Rose - June 22, 2007 05:02 AM (GMT)
Okay...That is IT.....

*goes out to buy a DS*

BlueRush - June 22, 2007 05:36 AM (GMT)
Yay! Um, what?

"RPG"? Isn't that, like Link, and any other 3rd-person game like Sonic and Metroid and etc.? Or are Bioware the Spore people? Meeso confused...

QUOTE (sonicnewssitecommentator)
Odd. I was half expecting a load of rabid fanboys to come out of the woodwork and start banging on about how the Satam characters should be included.

Great idea!! Sally! Julie-Su! Antoine! Rotor!

but i like time travelz Y_Y

RPG games are generally like Final Fantasy, those PS2 FMA games, Disgaea, Super Mario RPG (heh), Pokemon...

BlueRush - June 22, 2007 05:57 AM (GMT)
...Ah, Pokemon! ^^; That's seriously the only one on that list I've played.

So, this Sonic game will be like Pokemon. Okay! ^^;

DBOZGT - June 26, 2007 03:02 PM (GMT)
I world love to see a Sonic RPG game come out on (PS2) & (Wii) Platform. It will be like Mario RPG Style the one on SNES instead of useing Mario Characters it will be sonic Characters.

Know that will be alsome.

Sega and Bioware bring a Sonic RPG to the DS.
Sega has been a rather unpredictable company as of late. A new NiGHTS game, a Sonic & Mario Sports game, various company acquisitions, and now this: a Sonic RPG from the makers of the critically acclaimed games Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire.

Sega has already teamed up with BioWare for an RPG based on the Alien movie franchise, so their choice of developer comes as no surprise.

The title is coming to Nintendo's DS handheld, and is expected to arrive sometime in 2008.

Sega President and COO Simon Jeffrey had this to say: "BioWare is one of the hottest names in RPG development in the world. Everyone at SEGA has huge confidence that Sonic is in the safest of hands, and that BioWare can create the ultimate handheld RPG experience for gamers of all ages."

The President of BioWare, Greg Zeschuk, said "We're thrilled to be working with SEGA on Sonic, one of the industry's most enduring and compelling icons."

"As huge fans of Sonic ourselves, we're committed to delivering a truly amazing story-driven experience within the Sonic universe, focusing on capturing the character's broad appeal and placing him in a completely original adventure." BioWare CEO Ray Muzky added.

So far, this is all that has been revealed. We'll bring you more info as it develops.

Clown Prince of Crime - July 7, 2007 11:40 PM (GMT)
Heh... and this topic was posted the very day I left, too... wow. XD

Ya... sorry about posting a topic about this like that, I honestly had no idea one already existed, since I was away for 2 weeks... but hey, you fixed things, at least. ^_^;

Anywho, now we HAVE to see all the retro characters come back... I hope...

Btw, speaking of time-traveling...

tinmanti - July 8, 2007 05:02 PM (GMT)
Woo! Prohaps this will be the return of the classics (fang, mighty, etc...)
I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that sega said they were re-vamping sonic? I've gotta get a DS now.

Master Pogi - July 9, 2007 06:51 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I heard about the Sonic RPG via IGN. I'm not a fan of RPG games, but this one looks interesting.

QUOTE (TSS Net)
In the last few days, third party behemoth Electronic Arts successfully acquired development studios Pandemic and BioWare. EA stated the reasons for the acquisition concerned the company's attempts at creating more successful RPG and adventure titles.

News concerning most of the Sonic the Hedgehog fanbase is the involvement of BioWare - as many are aware, the developers of Mass Effect were reported to be creating a Sonic RPG exclusively for the Nintendo DS, in co-operation with SEGA.

The fact that BioWare will now be an EA studio raises questions as to the futures of the studio's upcoming projects. Microsoft went on record to state that Mass Effect will not be affected by the acquisition (maintaining its XBOX 360 exclusive status) but SEGA has yet to be reached for comment concerning the Sonic RPG.

SEGA's bitter history with Electronic Arts, and considering the two are rivals in the publishing business, have led many to believe this might put any chance of a Sonic RPG - from BioWare at least - on the rocks.

TSS has asked SEGA for comment - keep an eye on Sonic News for the latest news on this development. It might be a long weekend.

Well... that certainly sucks. Finally, a good use for so many characters and the possibility of many older characters returning... yet it all seems to be unlikely to happen, now. :/

Dark Phazon - October 15, 2007 12:02 AM (GMT)
EA. Aquire Everything.

...

But seriously, this isn't good news, even outside of this potential Sonic RPG. EA buying things usually doesn't mean good news for the stuff they buy.

GoldenSama - October 15, 2007 03:51 AM (GMT)
=_=

EA... if you destroy the Sonic RPG... a idea I have been dreaming of for ages... I will do everything in my power to destroy you.

... Not that, you know, I have power... but still! I wanna see Sonic RPG! ;_;

EA sucks.

Shadowlover19 - October 16, 2007 02:36 AM (GMT)
E.A. wouldn't do that would they? No! i was so excited for this RPG! I love RPGs... and I love Sonic this was a freaking DREAM!!

Avenger29 - October 18, 2007 10:15 PM (GMT)
First off, whats with the EA hating all of the internuts? They make great games! Well, their sports ones are good, at least...

And I haven't quite sounded off about the RPG since it was announced, but I think its a bad idea. Its bad enough that the Sonic Fan Community is flooded with horrid fancharacters already, but with the release of this game, it'd be like, "Yeah! Go ahead! Make our fanbase look even MORE idiotic!"

Its just my own opinion, but aside from a very, very small handful, fancharacters are the worst things about the Sonic Fan Community. I mean, you have the very small handful of them that are actually original, but the rest are just a bunch of lame Shadow clones. Its like, "Oh wow. You changed his stripe colors and gave him scars on his wrists. Whoop-De-Do.".

Gah... I'm ranting again... </avengerant>

But yeah, this game is a bad idea, and I honestly am against its release.

Dark Phazon - October 18, 2007 10:57 PM (GMT)
Very interesting perspective, there, Avenger. (and in case that sounds sarcastic, it isn't :p ; I just find it an interesting opposite take from this)

Though also, I don't understand the connection between a Sonic RPG and fan-characters. :heh: (Unless you're thinking about the types of RPGs that involve basically making your own character to play through the game, instead of the type of RPG where you play as pre-made characters)

...

And now I have the sudden desire to play some Super Mario RPG, now... XD

Yeah, thats what I'm talking about. I figured thats what this would be, unless I've misread the articles and it is, in fact, a true Sonic RPG. In that case, it might be interesting.

Sonic RPGs starring Sonic himself? I can deal with em.
Sonic RPGs that let you create your own characters? No thanks. I see enough legacy destroying on DeviantART.

Clown Prince of Crime - October 19, 2007 04:33 AM (GMT)
o_O I have no idea where you would get the idea that this RPG would let you create your own characters. In fact, most RPGs that are based on a pre-existing franchise rarely ever (IF they ever) do that. Like Super Mario RPG or The Legacy of Goku.

Anywho, as for the topic of fancharacters... I've decided to make a separate thread for that here.

The Vidit of Light - October 19, 2007 06:21 AM (GMT)
Well, if Bioware is, in fact, still going to be making the Sonic RPG, then I say they may not have been able to pick a better studio for the job. For any of you who may not know, Bioware has been behind such excellent role-playing games as "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" and its sequel, and the upcoming (I think) title "Mass Effect".

Helios - November 15, 2007 09:55 AM (GMT)
Hmmm... A sonic RPG, I doubt they'll give you the ability to make your own character (of course, I could be wrong). So, what sort of storylines are you guys looking forwards to?

Clown Prince of Crime - November 18, 2007 08:39 AM (GMT)
Well, despite the acquisition of Bioware by EA, Bioware still intends to work with Sega on making this Sonic RPG. So, things look good. :)

Avenger29 - November 18, 2007 08:49 AM (GMT)
How did that happen? I mean, considering EA and Sega hate eachother, due to the EA Sports "exclusivity" deals.

One word: Contract.

When one company has a contract with another company, and one of those companies suddenly is acquired by a third company, the third company also acquires any and all currently valid contracts.

Thus, if EA called off the Sonic RPG game, it would mean they'd break the contract. If you suddenly have a contract with someone you hate, the last thing you want to do is break it -- 'cause then they can sue.

...

I'm fighting the urge to sing that Weird Al song that just came to mind.

...

But, yeah, basically they'll continue the game or risk breaking the contract, which gives Sega legal action they could take against them.

Clown Prince of Crime - November 18, 2007 09:08 AM (GMT)
Sama the lawyer. I'm suddenly reminded of the very first Birthday Gnome story... XD

Hmm... Hadn't thought about that.

You play too much PW, you know?

................Ah, who am I kidding? We all know there's no such thing as "too much" of that.

GoldenSama - November 18, 2007 05:47 PM (GMT)
XD

Gnome... Yes, I need to finish that.

It'll only be too much Phoenix Wright when get to college, disagree with the professor, and should "Objection!"

Luckily Sonic RPG will still come forward! ^^ Although the only downside is that if the game isn't highly successful, the odds of a sequel will be low... but then they could just make one with someone other than EA, so I dunno.

DBOZGT - December 19, 2007 08:33 AM (GMT)
Sonic RPG for DS If im correct when is this game coming out?

Clown Prince of Crime - December 19, 2007 08:36 AM (GMT)
I'm not even sure when production of the game starts, so I think it's still way too early to know when it's coming out.

DBOZGT - December 22, 2007 12:54 AM (GMT)
I see thanks Admin

Just read this at Sonic News while reading up on the True Blue album.

QUOTE
Sega Japan have made a new trademark, the name? Sonic Chronicles. Nothing is known at this time other than it's marked down under computer games. Could this be a new Sonic game on the way or could Sega just be protecting a name? Let the speculation begin...

Reading this reminded me of a previous topic I made, reporting that 1Up.com had heard that Sega was back to work on a "real" Sonic game. The way I see it, this could either be (A) the new game rumored by 1Up, or (2) a brand new "Mega Collection" dealie, featuring every Sonic game up to Heroes.

Anyways, thats just what I think. What about you guys?

tinmanti - January 6, 2008 12:45 PM (GMT)
Well, when I first read the name it reminded me of the name 'Sonic Adventures'. I'm hoping this is that next big game. Sonic Chronicles does have a good ring to it...

Shadowlover19 - January 7, 2008 11:23 PM (GMT)
I heard a rumour that it was the name of the new Sonic RPG for the Nintendo DS, but it could also be a totally different game

The latest issue of Nintendo Power has massive coverage of the Sonic RPG for the DS. It's going to be called The Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Here's some info on the game:

-Cover Story with nice artwork
-In game graphics have a water color look, all hand drawn
-4 party members at a time
-Each character can do certain things ex: Tails can float over things (standard stuff)
-11 party members total - 7 known are Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Rouge, Shadow, Big the Cat
-Control done fully with stylus - think Hourglass
-Able to split party into teams at certain moments
-Rings are used as currency
-No random battles, see enemies on the field
-Turn based battles, choose commands for everyone in your party before they actually follow through. Want battles to be fast paced
-Elite Beat Agents style special attacks
-Team attacks (like Chrono Trigger)
-"Fatigue Points" instead of MP
-Choose which attributes to increase when you level up
-Purchase and level special attacks
-Bits of story - Sonic's on vacation from defeating Eggman 2 years ago. Gets a call from Tails that Knuckles has been kidnapped by a group called the Marauders, and that 6 chaos emeralds are missing. Eggman not the main villain. But Bioware wants to make him a creditable bad guy again. Something about a "twist" between Eggman and Sonic that goes back to the earlier games.
-2 acts - first takes place in standard Sonic areas. 2nd takes place in a darker world
-Remixed classic tunes
-"fully animated cut scenes"
-simple dialogue trees
-Side quests

The bitchin cover art can be found here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=226943

So far, the game looks amazing, but so did Sonic Next Gen

Bonus points if it has intro and ending(s) in Jack Kirby comic style with 50's narration.

And Kudos to Bioware for liking Big the Cat. I thought I was the only person who liked him.

Maybe because he's voiced by none other than Duke Nukem.

Now THAT's some good info. I wonder if they're placing it on Earth, like the other "main" Sonic games (Sonic Adventure series, Shadow the Hedgehog at least), or not?

tinmanti - January 12, 2008 07:42 PM (GMT)
The bad thing is that when I saw those shots, the first thing I thought was 'Sonic 3D'. Hope that's not the case.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS! YES! OH MY GOD, YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

It's got everything I always wanted! Sonic, but in a RPG setting... Knuckles getting kidnapped means he's actually involved in the story in some way... systems like Hourglass, Chrono Trigger...

I think I'm in loooooooooooove. =) Bioware, if this is even half as cool as it sounds, you shall be worth a million kudos!

EDIT: OMG! WAIT!

I just realized.... Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood...

Dark Brotherhood... Knuckles is kidnapped... six chaos emeralds stolen...

>:] I realize there is a very, very slim chance that it could be... but it could be. Sega's equivalent of the Dark Legion!

Shadowlover19 - January 12, 2008 09:38 PM (GMT)
Yes!! Finally some info on the Sonic RPG. and it looks AWESOME!! and BioWare is awesome so this game cannot suck. But there's one thing that's bugging me... six Chaos Emeralds?
