Title: An IRC Channel?
Description: Would it be a good idea?

Clown Prince of Crime - August 14, 2005 03:28 AM (GMT)
Well, I've been trying to think of ways to share my AoStH, SatAM, and Sonic X episodes, but so far, it seems hopeless. But then I started thinking what if we had an IRC channel? It'd mean that it'll be easy to share my files with you guys, however, would it also render this board useless? I dunno, I'm considering it, but I also still wanna be able to use this message board. Any thoughts and/or opinions?

Cojo - August 14, 2005 03:57 AM (GMT)
Im kinda an idiot on this subject but whats an Irc channel?

Kimiko - August 14, 2005 05:41 AM (GMT)
I dunno what it means, but I hope it doesn't cause any difficulties for the board and have it crash like teh RxS shrine often does.

Clown Prince of Crime - August 14, 2005 05:50 AM (GMT)
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. Basically, you download something like mIRC or, even better, Sysreset, and then you use that program to go into a channel, which is essentially a chatroom. However, the cool thing about these kinds of chatrooms (and what they're usually used more for than chatting) is that you can share files on them by setting up a server (and you don't upload anything, the server is just a link to files on your computer).

Obviously, since it's not really gonna be on the message board, it won't crash it or anything. However, I still wanna keep this board, and I am a bit worried that having an IRC channel would make people just chat there than be here. Chatrooms are fun and all, but I really wanna be able to have topics and stuff, since not everyone can be on at the same time.

So, there's a lot to have to consider here.

Kimiko - August 14, 2005 06:08 AM (GMT)
THis reminds me of a problem we had at teh DM board.

You see, we'd gotten a Chazy chatroom, but no one ever went there and it made people's computers crash. So, we took it up with rest of teh board and we decided just to use teh chat room we had at teh board...

But then our admin got mad because she claimed she wasn't part of the decision. Then she said something rude about Joha and things got a bit ugly...

But that probably has nothing to do with this. I like the way things are now, just being here with other people that share your intrests through certain topics. And I like the way it's set up, so orgainized. But it's your call, dude.

Clown Prince of Crime - August 14, 2005 06:26 AM (GMT)
Hmmm... well, it's the weekend, so not many people on right now. But I do want other opinions, so I'll leave this open for a long while before deciding on anything. I'm starting to think it could be beneficial to have an IRC channel, but this would all carry a bunch of extra baggage. Hmmm... x.x I hope I'm not the only one here that knows what IRC is... if there's others here that know what it is, this whole concept might be a little easier to accomplish, if it were to be carried out.

And, wow, the stuff that happened at the DM board sounds pretty bad. I hope that kinda stuff doesn't happen here. But I do try to not let the power of being an admin go to my head. I know that has happened to a lot of admins in the past. Ooh, boy, do I know...

HellAvatar - August 14, 2005 07:35 AM (GMT)
You've got to have a good server for an IRC client, dude. To support the clients that would be connecting to it... Yea, I'd say that technical difficulties could be a problem. It won't render this board useless, though. Think about it. We can have several different discussions on the boards... And we can actually have quicker, much more reliable discussions on the IRC, don't you think?

Not to mention the fact that several roleplays could actually go WAY faster, but ahemm... That's only my opinion.

IRC could be a good idea. BUT. You've got to have a good-powered server with a nice supply of bandwidth for this to work.

You damn right things got ugly. If someone like her wants to accuse me of something I didn't start, things definitely won't end beautiful. I had to force that apology outta her =[

And if we actually did this whole IRC thing (Still don't get the whole IRC concept, but I'll figure it out XD), I for one would still visit the board everyday like nothing was added. The reason the DM board died was it was pretty pointless. It was just a place to post dolls, while we could just do that at the R/S Shrine. But here, theres a lot of Sonic things to discuss. So that's the main difference.

I don't think there'd be too much of a problem getting a good server, honestly. But it might still be a little while before I go that far, if I do go that far. But if you really think that an IRC channel would not render this board useless, that definitely does persuade me to want to get an IRC channel just a little bit more. Actually, this thread was just a loud thought. I'm gonna have to think about this some more, but I am highly considering it.

HellAvatar - August 14, 2005 09:10 AM (GMT)
Future note to self: Don't mess around with Joha. It just doesn't end well.

But the IRC idea... Internet Relay Chat Client... I think it is a good idea. A VERY good idea in my eyes. I'd only be too happy to actually see one of those here, it would make our lives a lot easier. Plus: It'd be a good place for conversation, no?

Crystal Rose - August 14, 2005 05:19 PM (GMT)
So wait? Do you download it to your computer or just go online to get to it?

It sounds like a pretty good idea ^^

Clown Prince of Crime - August 14, 2005 06:59 PM (GMT)
Well, you need an IRC program to go into IRC channels. Since so many people here don't seem to know anything about IRC, when and if I decide to start an IRC channel, I'll also have to set up instructions so that everyone can get the most out of it, as well as not stumble in the dark.

Cojo - August 14, 2005 07:02 PM (GMT)
If its downloading I might not be able to do it till my new computer comes. And on that computer if something has over like 40 ppercent chances of viruses it wont let me download it.

HellAvatar - August 14, 2005 07:24 PM (GMT)
I know an IRC program that is reliable and virus-free. All CPoC has to do is set up a server base for it, so the client can connect. Once that is done, I have ideas, mostly a program called mIRC, which is very reliable in the ways of virus or other. No spamming. Just a good IRC client.

Clown Prince of Crime - August 14, 2005 07:32 PM (GMT)
miRC is good, but I think Sysreset, a modification of mIRC, is even better, as it allows anyone to set up a server for their files, and with a considerable amount of ease. After some of my files are downloaded by you guys, I'm gonna want you to share them withe everyone, too.

Sysreset is reliable, I've never had any problems or viruses because of it. Like I said, all it is is a modification of mIRC to give it several more features.

HellAvatar - August 14, 2005 07:49 PM (GMT)
I guess that leaves us with one thing: Are you gonna put it up or not? To put it up or not to put it up? That is the question. And your decision, CPoC. As I ewas saying, it is a good idea. If you want an active cvonversation with someone, download files, or just simple RP, then an IRC is a great idea. The forum won't die either: there are RPs here that are unstopped. Which is the advantage, I say.

Cojo - August 15, 2005 02:58 AM (GMT)
Hey what would happen though if we did an rp in there and someone missed out on it? Is there a way to like read what people said even though your not there?
Hey a plus we could do an adventure of SuperKimi and WonderSama rp there.

HellAvatar - August 15, 2005 03:33 AM (GMT)
It is possible to log the entire conversation. Somebody just has to have the willingness to record a .txt file with the conversation!

Clown Prince of Crime - August 15, 2005 05:29 AM (GMT)
But, see, that's the thing, we're not moving everything to the IRC channel. While you can chat in there and everything, the main purpose would be file-sharing. I still want this board active. If you did want to RP in real-time at the IRC channel, it wouldn't be any RP from here. I like to think of that as speed RPing.

I think I will end up having an IRC channel, but it won't be for a little while, as I have other things to do, first. Plus, I don't have as much free time as I wish I did. Anywho, while some of the stuff that we do here, anyway, could still be done at the IRC channel, I'm hoping we keep it to a minimum so that we can still continue to use this board. As I've said countless times, the main reason I'm thinking about getting an IRC channel is to share episodes of Sonic shows.

HellAvatar - August 15, 2005 06:27 AM (GMT)
Dude, don't worry about the board going inactive. As I said, there would be a fine line between several things. You are adding sort of a dessert to a main meal, so to say. While the dessert is also preferrable, the meal itself is required. It's like the one forum that I have been to. They have an IRC channel, and a fully active board. The conversations and RPs here in the forums have an advantage to them, and the ones on the IRC would have their own flavoring. I'm not leaving the board, no matter if you want me to or not.

But I'm sure as heck joining in the IRC. Heh, I'm not passing a chance like THAT.

J0HA - August 15, 2005 04:40 PM (GMT)
You... really like using metaphors don't you? But using those particular items actually made me more interested. And I don't think we'd have to worry about this board going inactive. At least I'm not worried about it, I have faith that our members will still visit like they normally do :P

GoldenSama - August 16, 2005 03:47 AM (GMT)
Aww, no worries about ME abandoning the board O Sire of the Spoon! XD

You can't get rid of me. No, literally, you can't. I'm like a weed. I'll just keep growin' and growin'. XD

Okay. In all seriousness, not too knowledgable about what an IRC channel is; but if it gives me a chance to get some Sonic episodes, then MARK ME DOWN! Sounds like a plan Spoonman!

Clown Prince of Crime - August 16, 2005 05:26 AM (GMT)
Well, seems like a lot of people are all for it. I can't say exactly when I'll be able to set things up, but I can almost assure you it won't be too soon. But, keep your eyes open, cuz it will happen at some point. I've made up my mind about it, it will come to pass. It'll be a little while, but it will happen.

GoldenSama - August 16, 2005 04:28 PM (GMT)
Wahoo! ^^

That's fantastic news.

HellAvatar - August 17, 2005 09:47 PM (GMT)
I just wanted to ask you a question, CPoC... Or whatever they call you now, Spoon? Well, I have a question. I know we are not to expect the IRC channel up any time soon, but are you planning on putting it up before fall when school starts? Because you know that then it will be much harder to reserve time for this, since work, school and other things are going to busy our minds.

Clown Prince of Crime - August 17, 2005 11:59 PM (GMT)
Heh, part of the reason I'm taking so long is cuz work HAS been the thing to busy my mind. u_u; Regardless of the season, my time is always just as occupied.

So, to answer your question, HA, I'm really not sure... but I'll do what I can.

Cojo - August 18, 2005 12:04 AM (GMT)
There is a small problem however. Time zones. What if someone in Ny wants to do stuff at like 5 then people in like Wa cant. So how would this work during school?

Clown Prince of Crime - August 18, 2005 12:57 AM (GMT)
Well, that would suck, cojo... but regardless, so long as I keep my server up for people to download stuff, that's all that matters, cuz really, that's the only reason I want to get an IRC channel. If there's more people on at the same time, that's cool, chat and do stuff. But it's not the main reason I'll be putting up an IRC channel. Understand, cojo, that it'll be an extension of this board, only. Not a replacement.

Cojo - August 18, 2005 01:00 AM (GMT)
ok I was just confused with what everyone has said.

BlueRush - August 18, 2005 01:09 AM (GMT)

Uhh, yeeeeah. IRC. Um. I totally know what that is.

Nobody bother explaining it to me, I get the gist. ^_^ If it'll be used EXCLUSIVELY for sharing files, it's fine... but as soon as we start moving RPs and threads over and it starts endangering the board, I don't like it.

I'm not debating, that's just my vote. No RPs over there. Not that I understand fully...

J0HA - August 18, 2005 01:13 AM (GMT)
I actually don't mind someone starting new, fast-moving RPs in the IRC, but if someone was planning to continue an RP from the board to there, that's what I'm against. But since CPoC wants this channel for file sharing, we gotta keep the RPs on a low or just don't have any at all ^_^

Clown Prince of Crime - August 18, 2005 01:52 AM (GMT)
I'm glad BR can see my point of view. And I also agree with Joha. I think everything will work out, though. As I think I've said more often than any of you would like, the channel is really only for file-sharing.

HellAvatar - August 18, 2005 04:45 AM (GMT)
Dude... If you do not want RPs in the IRC, that is fine with me. BUT. I will tell you that in fast-paced RPs I can definitely make even more havoc and cause even more destruction than in the forums. I have speed-played for quite a while, and I know how to do so.

Considering I spend a lot of my time on chatrooms, roleplaying my time away, which is how I gained my edge, but that is an entirely different story so ahemm! Back to the discussion.

As I said before, I would be alright with anything. Dang, if I could see some of the stuff being hosted on IRC, I'll do just that. But if the IRC room is also open for new, fast-paced RPs, I'd be even more drawn to it, spending my time about half and half to one or the other, forum or IRC room.

Clown Prince of Crime - August 18, 2005 09:17 AM (GMT)
I'm not against anyone RPing in the IRC channel... but the RPs that are here should remain here, or else they'll be hard to keep track of. That's all I'm saying.

La X'hal - August 19, 2005 07:48 PM (GMT)
0_0 That sounds uber cool. It seems as if it's already been decided as a yes, but I give my stamp of approval. *stamp*

Out of curiosity... CPoC-sama, are the Sonic episodes you have in japanese? *is obsessed with japanese*

Clown Prince of Crime - August 19, 2005 09:09 PM (GMT)
Well, the Sonic X ones are. And they're fansubbed. Some of the subtitles are a bit inaccurate by translating things into curse words that aren't there, but since it's a fansub, that's to be expected. u_u

But, ya, the Sonic X episodes are in Japanese. However, the AoStH and SatAM episodes are in English (cuz they're American cartoons).

La X'hal - August 19, 2005 09:38 PM (GMT)
*success* Yes. Bwahaha.

Thank you for that. n_n

Clown Prince of Crime - August 21, 2005 10:36 PM (GMT)
Okay... don't quote me on this... but I may be able to start getting things underway either by the end of the month, or sometime during the first few weeks of September. Like I said, though, don't quote me on that.

HellAvatar - August 26, 2005 08:00 AM (GMT)
Sweet.

I'd be happy if you got it going that soon. It'd be absolutely great.

XD Sorry, I'm just a sarcastic little monkey and I wanted to do that. :P

But anywho, in seriousness it would be awesome if you had it up soon and stuff. To be able to see some of those older Sonic cartoons again will be fun. ^^
