Title: Transformers
Description: Autobots vs Decepticons
Clown Prince of Crime - May 28, 2008 11:01 PM (GMT)
This topic is for anything and everything related to Transformers (except the live-action movie, as that has its
own topic). I mostly created this, though, because I'm starting to get really addicted to the new "Transformers: Animated". It's just so... awesome! Though I guess that should be expected since a good deal of the people working on it also worked on Teen Titans. Heck, the city of Detroit never so closely resembled Jump City before.
Anywho, this series is awesome! After four different Japanese series that were mediocre at best, the franchise finally comes back to America and I dare say it comes back with a bang!
I've been following the series a little bit, but I haven't seen every single episode. I kinda want to, now, though, because I've been REALLY getting into it! And as awesome as the series has been, it jumped up several thousand notches on the awesomeness scale when they introduced Wreck-Gar! His episode has soooooo many references to both the 1986 movie as well as to his voice actor, Weird Al Yankovic. Having Weird Al voice him in and of itself is a reference to the 1986 movie, as well, since in that movie they used the song "Dare to be Stupid" (a song by Weird Al) as a theme for the Junkions (in a scene where we're first introduced to Wreck-Gar). Additionally, Wreck-Gar even says the name of that song at one point in the episode!
I wanted to do a music video after watching that, but about a million other people on YouTube already got that idea... XD

Also, I think Sari's a pretty cool character. One of the many things that was disappointing about the four Japanese series that came out before Animated (Transformers: Robots in Disguise, Transformers: Armada, Transformers: Energon, and Transformers: Cybertron) is that the humans in those shows sucked. They were bland and devoid of interesting personalities. But Sari is just FULL of personality, which is only accentuated by her voice actress, Tara Strong.
Now, I apologize to anyone that liked the newer Transformers anime shows, but I'm just stating my opinion. I don't think they stack up very well with the original G1 series or with the newest incarnation: Animated. The only thing I liked about those shows is that I thought it was kinda cool that they used the voice actors for Optimus Primal and Megatron Rex from Beast Wars to do the roles of Optimus Prime and Megatron, but that's about it. And I like anime and all, but those four shows overdid it with the anime clichés. And come to think of it... the Transformers themselves seemed a little bland, too, so I guess it wasn't just the human characters. I guess because of those shows, I was worried about Transformers: Animated, but thankfully, this new show seems to really bring the series back to its roots!
Okay, anywho, I'll stop ranting now. XD
Crystal Rose - May 28, 2008 11:27 PM (GMT)
OMG Wreck-Gar is soooooo random XD
Since I now know there are people who like Animated I won't post post any spoilers :D
Actually I'm surprised that people other than myself (who is notorious for loving shows that other people hate) like Transformers Animated. In my opinion it's the best cartoon of the series because of it's sleek style, hilarious dialouge, and extreme character development (Autobots, Decepticons, and humans). It gives me that Teen Titans feeling everytime I watch it and I love it!
There are tons of characters I love in the show but of course my favorite is Sari. Why? Well she's adorable and extremely funny and she's also voiced by one of the best American VA in the last 20 years....Tara Strong! She's been a part of almost every major cartoon in the last 20 years with characters such as Hello Kitty, Dil Pickles, Raven, Ben Tennyson, Bubbles,Omi, and Timmy Turner and has worked on shows and games such as Avatar, Kingdom Hearts, Princess Mononoke,Sonic the Hegehog, and Mario and she'll probably continue to be amazing from years on.....
Okay so now you all know i'm obsessed with Tara Strong. Anyways back to Transformers.
Bumblebee makes me smile, he's such a teenager and his character interacts so well with all the humans (at times you feel like he'd rather be one of them). Prowl is an awesome Ninja-bot who trys to act like he coud be in charge one day but still has snags that prevent him from being a good leader. Bulkhead is adorable because he's huge and gentle. He'd much rather make things than break things.....Most of the time. Rachet is an old bot who's sorta cranky but cares about his team and Sari, though he hates to admit it. And then Optimus Prime is the unsure leader, still new to being in charge but always pulling through.
Of course then there are always bad guys too, which I haven't seen one I didn't like (not including the small time one episode human baddies). Some of the human villans are really well done too. I really like Porter C. Powell who works for Issac Sumdac's company....He's a jerk face who you'll hate as the show goes on. The Headmaster is pretty cool too. He makes me laugh.
The show=Awesome.....There are so many twists and things that make this show fun but serious (once again just like Teen Titans)
It's totally worth a watch!
Clown Prince of Crime - May 31, 2008 06:00 PM (GMT)
Ya, Powell is indeed quite the jerk. I mean, he put Sari out of a home without any remorse at all! Also, the Decepticons are a lot cooler here than they've ever been before, in my opinion. In the past, they've always been this scheming group of bad guys that would try some crazy scheme at world domination and be foiled by the Autobots by the end of the episode. But in Animated, they seem to be a much more sinister and mysterious group of villains who are always one step ahead of the Autobots! It's pretty awesome!
So, when do they show new episodes, usually? Also, I really need to watch all the episodes in order. I've seen quite a few episodes, but I don't know what happens when and stuff. XD
And now for an obligatory theme song video post... I'll post theme songs from every single Transformers series ever (that I'm aware of). Transformers is an interesting franchise in that it has so many series created both in the U.S. and in Japan... though, until Animated came along, it seemed like Japan was totally taking over the franchise. XD Out of the ones I've seen, I didn't really like the Japanese shows that much, though, to be honest, but I probably already mentioned that... and I'll probably have to stop mentioning it, in case there's people here that really liked them. ^_^;

Holy crap... it isn't until I posted these that I realized just how popular Transformers is in Japan. Despite being an American creation, I think there's actually MORE Japanese shows than American shows.
Crystal Rose - May 31, 2008 07:29 PM (GMT)
New episodes come out on Saturday mornings at 10:30am on Cartoon Network, YTV also airs episodes a week earlier than CN which usually appear online that night :D
Sooooooo many intros! I never knew there were that many versions of the show!
Dark Phazon - May 31, 2008 08:32 PM (GMT)
I thought the original animated series at least some partial Japanese involvement with some part of it's creation/original-airing/something???
As for Transformers series, I think I remember watching one of the original series quite a bit when I was little, as well as a lot of Beast Wars, and a little bit of one or two of the more-recent series.

Honestly, neither did I! :heh:
Though, most of them are not only Japanese, but they also were never released in America... which would explain why I haven't heard of so many of them. XD
But, ya, it's weird because going over that entire list of series, only four of them (the original Transformers, Beast Wars, Beast Machines, and Transformers: Animated) are American produced. Everything else is Japanese. Well... it does involve robots, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised! XD

Yes, there was some Japanese involvement in the series, but it was still an American produced cartoon. Many cartoons of the 1980s actually had Japanese involvement, and the same can be said about many cartoons of the 1990s (Tiny Toons and Batman: The Animated Series come to mind). Heck, even the recent Transformers: Animated has a lot of Japanese involvement.
Fun Fact: The people who animated for Akira also worked on Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.
But, ya, it's not uncommon for an American show to get a little help overseas.

That's about how it is with me, as well. Heh, I used to watch Beast Wars all the time when I was little. They used to show it on Fox Kids... holy crap, Fox Kids? I am so sad that it no longer exists.
Speaking of which, I thought it was a little shocking that Transformers: Animated would have Blackarachnia, a character from Beast Wars. Of course, Animated has its own continuity, so they changed things around and now Elita One (from the original series) and Blackarachnia have been made into one character. Also, of course, Blackarachnia isn't a Predacon in this series, she's a Decepticon. They took some very creative liberties with this show, but it all works out very well and it's nice to see them take a little bit of many different incarnations of Transformers. And Spike Witwicky (the kid from the original series) made a cameo in the background once, I've heard.
Of course, turning Elita One into Blackarachnia means Optimus doesn't get a girlfriend. On the other hand... I wonder if this could lead to some interesting stories. I don't believe Optimus ever found out that Blackarachnia was once his beloved Elita One (whom he probably thinks is dead).

Well, that last sentence is revealed near the end of
episode 9. :3
I've really been getting into this series. I've only seen the first 14 episodes, so I'm not an expert, but what I've seen so far (and what I've heard from a certain spoilerific someone *coughCRcough* :p ), it looks like a really good show. Of course, I've already encountered some bashing about it ("they look too organic" "Bumblebee and Starscream have the worst voices EVAR" "the animation sucks"), but really, all of these comments are coming from people who are basing all of their Transformers knowledge on the live-action movie.
I must admit, though... I was introduced to Transformers by the movie. XD But the new animated series has encouraged me to learn more about it. Hoorah, wiki!
Clown Prince of Crime - June 3, 2008 11:42 AM (GMT)
In all honesty, I feel that Transformers: Animated is much truer to the spirit of the original series than the live-action movie was. ^_^;
Heh... I'll probably get a lynch-mob on me for this, but I didn't particularly care very much for the live-action movie outside of the cool special effects. It's kind of interesting, really. When I first heard about the live-action movie, I was so stoked and pumped up to see it, but ultimately I kinda felt let down when I did see it. Then Animated gets announced and I noticed the major redesign of all the characters and I think to myself, "Woah, now that's creative liberties". I didn't have high expectations for Animated, but then when I found out that the people who worked on Teen Titans were responsible for this series, I decided I had to check it out and I'm glad I did.
Ya, I've heard most of those people that complain about the art style (they say "the animation sucks", but what they're actually (and quite ignorantly) referring to is the art style). I had my reservations about the art style myself, when I initially saw design sketches. However, once I saw the show for myself, I very quickly adapted to it. Maybe the "Teen Titans" look turns a lot of people off because they feel like it's a needless modernization of the characters, but if those same people don't mind flame decals on Optimus Prime in the live-action movie, then they're total hypocrites. I like the unique art style and I'm glad that the characters look so dynamic! I seriously can't stand all the criticism that this show receives due to its look. A lot of the people I've talked to that don't want to give it a chance have actually stated that they don't care how good the story may be, they can't enjoy the story when ugly "animation" is staring back at them (again, they're actually referring to the art style, not the animation, but I said that already). I can't help but think that's a sad statement to make. Now, of course, I see nothing wrong with the art style and, as I've said, I'd even go as far as saying that I love it! But even if that wasn't the case, is it really an excuse to dismiss good writing? It's not like the art is even bad, it's just highly stylized.
And what's this about Bumblebee and Starscream's voices? This is the first I've heard of this, but I don't quite understand this. Especially with Starscream, whom I think sounds similar to the original Starscream.

Thanks! I've wanted to see that episode, actually. I only knew of Blackarachnia's origin in Animated by reading Wikipedia. XD
Crystal Rose - June 3, 2008 04:09 PM (GMT)
If you're following the episodes based on when they appear on youtube and not the CN then on Friday there will be another episode which involoves Optimus and Blackarachnia which could be pretty interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing it as soon as it hits youtube.
Personally I liked the Transformers movie, of course I ended up seeing it after watching half the animated series but it was pretty intresting to me anyways. And as for the art style, it was different (I got the same feeling that I did whn I saw Teen Titans fr the first time) but I got used to it quick and loved it.
I love Bumblebee's voice Bumper Robinson is an awesome VA :D
Tazzy Porqupine - June 3, 2008 08:41 PM (GMT)
Again, these are the people who are basing their knowledge of Transformers off of the movie. I really don't think Starscream's voice is all that bad. What, did they expect *all* the bad guys to sound dark and foreboding? Different characters have different personalities. Starscream's voice may not be as deep as Megatron's, but it definitely suits his character.
As for Bumblebee's, I think its awesome. Yeah he sounds childish, but if he had a more serious voice, his character would be lost amongst the many other mature autobots. Not to mention it would kinda isolate Sari's personality a bit, seeing as how her and Bumblebee are so alike. His teenage voice and personality kinda act as the bridge between the huge age and maturity differences of Sari and the others.
Overall, though, I like the casting. It really surprised me though, when I took a trip to Wikipedia and found out that many of the voices are done by the same people (i.e. Megatron and Ratchet; Prowl and Captain Fanzone; Bumblebee and Blitzwing; Starscream and Dr. Sumdac; Optimus Prime and Lugnut; etc). Even though I know other shows must do the same thing with their VAs, it just surprised me how they did it so...well. (Though, now as I watch it, I can hear some of the similarites)

((When reading this, take note I have not seen the recent movie, nor the recent cartoon))
I've never ever associated Starscream with a voice anywhere similar to Megatron's actually. The voice I think of when I think "Starscream's Voice" is a high annoying and complaining voice, which I got from one of the old pre-Beast-Wars Transformers programs, at least.
And I've always associated Bumblebee as being some young rookie-autobot.
From what it sounds like, this animated program has the Transformers' "character" down right.
And from what it sounds like, the movie, beyond how every commercial I saw showed the movie to not actually be focused on the Transformers but instead the humans, also seems to have had issues in making the characters be like how they are supposed to be like...

When comparing Starscream's voice to Megatron's, I didn't mean that Starscream should have a deep and sinister voice. I was just poking fun at the fact that the people who said "Starscream's voice sucks" seem to thing that all villains should have a voice that is dark and foreboding, which is completely untrue, as shown by Starscream. :3

That's exactly what I thought you were saying. :p I was just trying to add to the point that those complainers don't know what they're talking about. :heh:

Well, if ya really wanna compare voices, then you can watch the beginning of each series. ;) Both Bumblebee and Starscream appear in both.
Here's the start of the original series.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfaZCYFOjZEBumblebee does sound younger in the new series, but it's still a fitting voice. He definitely still sounded like a typical rookie in the old series. As for Starscream... I honestly barely even notice much of a difference in his voice, so any complaints on his voice completely baffle me.
Oh, and just for the heck of it, here's the best version of the original theme! The one that was used in the movie (and when I say the movie, I mean the original 1986 animated movie).
[dohtml]<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0QgjwxPZxWo&hl=en&hl=en&rel=0&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0QgjwxPZxWo&hl=en&hl=en&rel=0&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>[/dohtml]
And just a quick note to anyone that hasn't seen the 1986 movie but is interested in it. It's meant to be seen after finishing season two (but before starting season 3). It's also much darker in tone than the series, but that's part of why it was so memorable. Well, that and some other stuff I can't talk about because of how spoilerific said stuff is.
