Title: What do you call it
Description: well?
BR - June 23, 2008 05:52 AM (GMT)
It is definitely a directional. My girlfriend's friend's ex-boyfriend's cousin who is a mechanic said so.
Also of interest: I drink soda. :p

I always call it a blinker myself.
Woot for soda.
Dark Phazon - June 23, 2008 06:26 AM (GMT)
Hmm... I call it "it", 'cause that's how "it" is spelled, and how it's printed out, pronunciation-wise, in the dictionary. Yep. :p
*insert emoticon of smiley getting run over by dump truck here*
In terms of the poll, turn signal and blinker are both terms I've heard the thing that signals turns called. Usually I call it a turn signal because of the simplicity of having something that signals turns be called a turn signal.
((I find it horrible that due to certain circumstances, I first read the poll commentary as "i want ask again"... ))
Avenger29 - June 23, 2008 06:27 AM (GMT)
I call it Scrambles... The Death Dealer...
Clown Prince of Crime - June 23, 2008 07:06 AM (GMT)
I usually just call it either "the turn signal" or more often just "the signal".
Knucxsonia - June 23, 2008 07:19 AM (GMT)
Turn signal. Definately turn signal.

...XD!!
I won't ever want to be contrary, but the directional thing makes sense to me for the same reason because it indicates direction. ^^
Avenger, your post confused me. XD
Anyway SO I forgot to ask where you were from. Zero pressure to answer, this is something I (we) randomly poll people as part of a long-standing bet-type-thing: I'm from the East coast, so I call it a directional; she's from the midwest and they all seem to call it a turn signal except for some blinker people. We're trying to figure out, is it a geographic thing, or is there some other system? I know where some of you are, vaguely; but anyway no more specific than "east/west/midwest/south/etc." or "urban/rural" is expected.
The soda/pop/coke thing, though, is definitely geographic. The internet has a map of it...

I'm from the West Coast and, if I remember right, I think DP and Avenger are from the East Coast.

Yep. East coast kid, right here.
And yeah, I just call it a signal, on the real-real.

I'm also from the East Coast, and I call it a turn signal. Though one time my mom was driving and she wasn't really paying attention and she was coming up to the turn to our street and I told her to turn like, three times. After she didn't seem to hear me, I switched to a Hispanic accent (she's from Honduras-- though I could be spelling that wrong-- and my brother used to mess with her like this) and said "Ey, turn on your blinker". I then proceeded to say it like three other ways before she finally realized she missed the turn, but this whole story is pretty unrelated. :heh:
Anyway-- David's girlfriend calls bruises "black and blues". She's from up North, and she says everyone from where ever she's from says it like that. Does anyone here say/know anyone who says that?

I don't really have a whole lot to add, but the title of this thread reminds me of an old candy bar that I haven't seen anywhere in a long time.

I'm living in the East Coast too (will I ever leave?! Gah!) but this wasn't where I was raised all my life or anything so I have a weird mix of words
A turn signal is a turn signal
All soda no matter which kind is Coke and sometimes Soda(I found myself constantly saying Coke up here while in Maryland and being looked at funny)
Traffic circles are roundabouts
X3

That reminds me of a time I asked a friend of mine to pick me up some fast food. I specifically told him I want a Coke, but I ended up with a Dr. Pepper. I asked him why he got me a Dr. Pepper and he said, "Well you didn't tell me what kind of Coke you wanted." And I was like "..."
So, ya. :heh:

....."It" is simply it. Enough said.

Other than little kids (to whom bruise is a tougher word to, I'd guess) I normally don't hear other people consistently refer to bruises as black & blues. There are certain circumstances I may hear it, but it usually isn't in consistent use like how (to take another example in this thread) some people will always consistently call all forms of soda "coke" or "pop" or "soda pop".
Personally, I call soda "soda". However, usually when I order anywhere and want specifically a "Coke", I'll normally order by saying "Coca-Cola" to avoid any issues like that (even though where I am, people usually also call them all "sodas").
Personally, I've only ever heard one person ever call a turn signal a "directional", and that's BR. :heh: However, it does sound like it would be a European/British way of saying a turn signal.
Anyway, I'm from the east/northeast (PA/NJ border, to be more specific).
GoldenSama - June 24, 2008 05:34 AM (GMT)
I call soda soda, but my grandparents call it pop. They're from Michigan, I was raised in Maryland.
The turn signal I call a blinker, mainly because turn signal is two words and I like to save time.
I've heard of "Black & Blue", but mostly on television.

I say indicator

It's called a turn siginal. At least I think it is... The manual for the "Familymobile" at our house is written in Swedish :hs:
