Title: Sonic and the Black Knight
Description: Could this be true...?

tailsonic15 - July 20, 2008 01:19 AM (GMT)
I know I know. The name.

http://www.sonicstadium.org/files/posts/2008/07/wtf1.jpg

Discuss. I'm not exactly sure if it's fake, because in the bottom right corner, it says "September 2008". But in other places, it has the names of other games, like Mario Super Sluggers, that have already been revealed to come out.

Also, if this was posted already...whoops :heh:

liunt - July 21, 2008 02:25 PM (GMT)
OK I was looking in the fan characters thing ,the talk about so many hedgehogs kinda made me redo some of the other guys I made, looking on I read something about Becky the hedgehog.

Being the curious guy I am(never heard of her), I went to the Creator of the girl on DA, scrolling down I saw this Someone is going to go Med-evil on somebody
So guys whats your take on this?

Edit: The game is real...happy or sad?

tinmanti - July 21, 2008 02:59 PM (GMT)
erm... is this real? I can't tell...
Well, if it is real, I hope sega aren't putting too much on their hands here. They're already working on two other sonic games.
hmm...

Avenger29 - July 21, 2008 05:25 PM (GMT)
Well, at least it's just for the Wii. Nothing I really have to worry about getting.

If it's part of the Secret Rings series, though, I will be downloading the soundtrack.

Crystal Rose - July 21, 2008 05:38 PM (GMT)
Sonic with a sword? That's like Shadow with his gun....I miss the good ol' days when our favorite hedgehogs pwn people with just their speed. Oh well, i'll probably buy it anyways since it's for the Wii :D

The Vidit of Light - July 21, 2008 08:50 PM (GMT)
Sonic with a sword?

You know, if they're going through the cultures of various medieval civilizations (Arabic with SatSR, Europe with this), that might be pretty cool. When I saw SatSR had an Arabic theme, I wanted it to be Arthurian legend instead or something...maybe that's basically what we'll get here.

But Sonic must watch out. As my avatar shows...

...THE BLACK KNIGHT ALWAYS TRIUMPHS!!!

Personally, I think this is fake. It's sorta suspiscious that the people who posted that cover covered up the information about the issue that's always on the lower-right with their logo...

THE PAIN!!! (image not mine)
But I probably won't get this. Sonic isn't lawful enough in nature to be a knight, it won't make sense... except in one scenario, which makes no sense as well.

Didn't I post a topic about this like 3 days ago? Ah well

Anyway, since it's been proven not fake, I'm looking forward to it. I'm interested in how the controls will be.

Dark Phazon - July 21, 2008 11:47 PM (GMT)
indeed TS did post a thread about it (though linking to solely the picture caused a problem there, because that sort of linking doesn't work well, with TSS, it seems).

About the game, I don't know enough about it to become interested or disinterested in it, yet. :heh:

EDIT: Well here's some more info (taken from the NP article)

I didn't know you posted this 3 days ago (two busy playing MGO). Now I kinda feel silly for some reason...

Crystal Rose - July 22, 2008 04:40 AM (GMT)
Sonic can smite people?

I now want this game.

The Vidit of Light - July 22, 2008 05:10 AM (GMT)
I can see it now...

Sonic: Hiya! *swings sword*

Black Knight (corrupted Arthur): *loses arm* Have at you! *swings sword, misses, and loses his other arm*

Sonic: It's over, man!

Black Knight: No it isn't! I'm invincible! The Black Knight ALWAYS triumphs! HAVE AT YOU! *tries to kick Sonic*

Anyway, nice find, DP!

This talk of townsfolk and helping them may imply that the stages will be part explore-and-interact in an SA style as well as run-and-smite.

S'ok ^_^ Stuff happens

After reading the article DP posted, I want the game twice as much

" 'And there will be no Dinosaur Eggs!' "

Did the other topic just merge with this one? Oo'

It's amazing that 1 little thing like a trailer or a few tidbits of information can completely change somone's mind. Most people I know hated the werehog bit of Sonic Unleashed, and now the newest trailer have completely spun their mind Oo'

I think it's a bit creepy, to be honest ._.

It's not suspicious at all. What's being covered up is the mailing address to whoever has Nintendo Power as a subscription. Considering how hard you try to hide your real name and address, why should you find it suspicious for other people to do the same? :p

Yes... yes it did. Though, I helped it do that.

*loves merging topics*

Anywho, I have yet to form an opinion on this game, but I will say this: I didn't see it coming. Granted, it's less of a surprise than seeing a Werewolf Hedgehog, but still...

BountyForager - July 23, 2008 04:55 PM (GMT)
I got another Black Knight joke.

Black Knight: You see that there, Tails? Your buddy's nothing but a fizzle!
Sonic: Nobody calls me a fizzle and gets away with it! ...Except that one guy who called me a fizzle and then ran off. He got away with it. But most people who call me a fizzle don't get away with it. Well, actually, that guy who got away with it was the only one who ever called me a fizzle. After today, only half the people who ever called me a fizzle will have gotten away with it.

I loved that episode of Family Guy... anyway, the game sounds great. I mean swords are awesome and if Sonic gets one... All the better.

Good point. I will buy it if any of the three conditions are true:
1.It has a cool, SA-style overworld and AWESOME WII REMOTE SWINGIN SWORDFIGHTIN ACTION!
2.You can use it to get a free Swords Dance TM in PMD2.
3.The theme song is "Dragoesti Din Tei"

I like the sword idea.

Imagine that sword coming at you at 300+ mph

Speaking of our beloved C40, I'm trying to track down footage of their concert at the Tokyo Game Show.

Supposed to have been a helluva show.

Still, when this comes out I'll be sure to try it out. Thanks Vidit for linking this.

Hmmmm this hasn't been posted in for awhile!

So has anyone played through Black Knight yet? I haven't played my Wii in ages (lol, I should have took it to England with me) but this for some reason has caught my eye. I've been watching the cut scenes for the last hour and I have to say I REALLY am starting to like the storybook style of cut scenes. They look even better than the last game with this style (Secret Rings). I also reaaaaalllly like the fact that more characters have cameos (Jet's one of the Knights of the Roundtable! And Amy's the lady of the Lake! Heck even Blaze is here!)

So i'm really falling in love with the story and style but I have NO clue if gameplay is worth the cash. Help?

Clown Prince of Crime - May 13, 2009 02:40 AM (GMT)
I haven't played it, either, honestly. I've heard mixed reviews, though. For the most part, it seems like a lot of people either like it or think it's okay. Not very many people have hated it, outside of possibly IGN since they hate all Sonic games.

Gamespot didn't like it too well, either, but when it comes to Sonic games, I usually disagree with them anyway.

AGodofIrony - July 16, 2009 05:51 PM (GMT)
Well, I bought the game yesterday, and since I got a bit carried away, I ended up beating it. I haven't unlocked all the extra stuff quite yet. (like some of the extra characters in the Battle mode), but the game, nonetheless.

SO...Let us go on.

Sonic and the Black Knight

A Spork review!

WARNING. Contains some spoilers!

Cinematics

Much like Sonic and the Secret Rings, SatBK cut scenes were comprised mostly of pictures with little movement. However, they were well drawn, and really helped bring about the idea of the game, as though it was a story.

In the handful of cut scenes that weren't done in the previously mentioned style, they were very crisp and clear. I honestly don't have to much to add.

During actual game play, the levels were fantastic to look at, and really made the world look vast, while still not being confusing and difficult to use.

Gameplay/Controls

Sonic using a sword...right? Lots of people were hesitant about this, but I have to say, it's actually pretty fun. At first it can be annoying, figuring it out, but the tutorial levels helped out.

During the boss battles, one might be tempted to swing the Wiimote wildly in hopes of attacking the opponent. With the exception of the first battle against Lancelot/Shadow, (which it's possible to win that way, though not easily), this is not the case. Tactics must in fact be employed in order to defeat the three Knights, King Arthur, and Merlina.

Speed is still important in the game, and it's quite fun dashing through the level, slashing through enemies and moving at high speeds.

There are four people useable (though the last three can't be used until a certain point).

Sonic

Speed's the name of the game with Sonic. He has three different styles. One deals with speed, one with attack, and the third with a balance of both.

There are in fact differences. The attack one slices through wooden shields along with taking out the opponent, as opposed to the other two, where two slices are required. The speed one has a noticeable boost in speed.

His special attack is something of akin to a Homing Attack/Dash, moving at super speeds to slice down opponents.

Lancelot/Shadow

Like with Sonic, Shadow is speedy. And he still has rocket skates. Yes. Lancelot has rocket skates.

To quote my sister (cleared up for language) “Of course Lancelot has smurfin' rocket skates. He's smurfin' Lancelot!”

While similar to Sonic in move set, Lancelot/Shadow is still different enough that it's not just like playing as Sonic.

Unlike Sonic, the three Knights do not have different styles, just their one.

When moving at full speed, Lancelot/Shadow's Soul Gauge (which is used for a special attack), fills up on it's own, letting one use his special attack more often then others.

Lancelot/Shadow's special attack appears to be Chaos Control. Lancelot/Shadow will warp to the nearest opponent, take them down with a swing of the Wiimote, then move to the next one, until the Soul Gauge is depleted. Where there is no opponent in the way, Lancelot/Shadow will fly forward until he finds out, or, again, the gauge is depleted.

Gawain/Knuckles

Gawain/Knuckles uses a two bladed weapon, slashing repeatedly, and is definitely the guy to use when you need to inflict damage.

Gawain/Knuckles is able to glide, a pleasant surprise I found. He's fairly fast (not as fast as the other three though), and he takes longer getting up to full speed then the others. His strength is definitely in attacking.

Gawain/Knuckles' special attack throws his weapons forward at enemies to take them out at a distance.

Percival/Blaze

Percival/Blaze fights with a rapier-like weapon, and thus her attacks are fast and furious.

Percival/Blaze's specialty is mid-air movement/fighting. She can dash through the air by use of the A button, and then a dash with a shake of the Wiimote, letting her get past large gaps.

Percival/Blaze's special appears to a 'Fire Tornado' like in the Sonic Rush games, creating a blaze of fire around herself, then dashing forward with a thrust of her sword.

Voice Acting

Jason Griffith may not have been a good Sonic when Sonic X came around, but, hearing him here, and looking back on the first episode of Sonic X, I have to say...

He's grown into the role. The differences between Sonic and Lancelot/Shadow were well done as well. Shadow no longer sounded like Sonic with a bit of cold and lowered pitch.

All I really have to say here.

Storyline

The King Arthur legend has so many different ways of being told, and so many different resources, it's impossible to have one actual source of knowledge. Despite this, the Sonic Team did a fairly decent job, considering everything.

First off, the opening scene was quite good. Sonic is suddenly called into another world. What's the first thing he does?

Scramble to catch his chili dogs.

Add that to staring down the evil King Arthur while spinning one of said chili dogs was, I have to say, golden.

One of the biggest problems I had with it was that they mentioned Camelot fell because of the rift between Gawain and Lancelot. That's not true. The King Arthur legends more or less hold true that King Arthur and thus Camelot fell because King Arthur's son/nephew Morgan killed him.

Of course, this being Sonic, they're not really going to imply the incest and what not that's in the King Arthur legend.

Plus the fact that Lancelot (Arthur's most loyal knight), ended up having a long going affair with Queen Guinevere and ran off with here...

SatBK never even mentioned her, by the way.

While the storyline can be annoying for those who know the Arthurian legend some, it's still very engaging, and later scenes help explain several inconsistencies away, and seeing Merlina as a proxy of Morganne Le Fay, it makes more sense.

And, on a related note, I liked how they had the scabbard of Excalibur gives the wearer immortality. Not to many people actually know this fact, so I was delighted to see that this was a major component in the storyline.

Overview

Overall, I highly enjoyed this game. I found it a lot of fun, and I know even though I beat it quickly, I'll still be picking it up somewhat often, and once my little brother gets here and learns how to play, I'll be able to try out some of the extra 2P stuff I haven't been able to try yet.

If you're just interested in playing through it once, or aren't one for keeping quick games, then I would recommend renting it, especially if you're not sure on it.

I have to give it a four out of five sporks for sheer fun, but only two and a half sporks out of five through replay value, which might in fact change once I'm able to try the Battle stuff.

Crystal Rose - July 16, 2009 06:55 PM (GMT)
.....And now I really want to play this.

So then is the control smooth? The one problem I came across playing Secret Rings is that Sonic seems very touchy with his speed and controlling him with the Wiimote is freakishly difficult starting out. I found myself falling a lot and missing targets (which is really annoying when some of the missions involve hitting all the targets in a level).

As for the storybook theme, i''m really starting to like it, i've always had a soft spot for 2D sonic animation and this is as close to that as we're getting :D

Pokol Da'Erran - July 16, 2009 10:32 PM (GMT)
The controls on SABK have always worked great for me, but I also thought the controls for SASR were great too...

Meh, I think you'd have to see for yourself.

Weird. I always thought the legends said the scabbard gave the wearer super-strength and super-endurance, not immortality... O_O

AGodofIrony - July 17, 2009 04:24 AM (GMT)
The controls are much smoother then SatSR. For one, you use the nunchuck to control the movement, and not titling the Wiimote. It's easier to move backwards is you missed something, and then double tapping the A button is for the Homing attack.

And from what I've seen, the scabbard gives one immortality. XD Goes to show you just how many different conflicting legends their are!

Pokol Da'Erran - July 18, 2009 10:03 PM (GMT)
Yeah, goes to figure. XD

Of course, my version of the legend says King Arthur didn't hang on to the scabbard for long, so, yeah. (Of course, it's not like they're sticking with the legend much in this game.)

Delilah the hedgehog - August 14, 2009 03:38 PM (GMT)
I've posted this after SatBN came out so I don't know why I'm even posting this. The game is wicked cool and fun.I recommend it.No offense to Secret Rings fans but I really don't like the game. It's to,I don't know, complicated and hard!Your probably moaning saying I should put effort into playing the game or somrthing... :(

(Please read other topic, ya need to stop)

(Again, sorry 'bout that bro.)

I'll keep this short. I like Sonic Unleashed. It is fast.
