Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a Giant Mecha anime from Gainax Studios -- the people who did Fooly Cooly (FLCL) and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

"In the sky-less cavern of a village Simon toils daily, drilling holes to expand his stifling little world until one day he makes an extraordinary discovery: a small glowing drill-bit and the man-sized mech it activates. Before he can give it a second thought Simon's dragged into a plot to break through to the surface by the local gang leader Kamina, only to have the ceiling come crashing down on top of them under the weight of a giant monster! It some how falls onto the boisterous Kamina and cowardly Simon to defend their village, but once they defeat the monster what awaits the duo on the surface world? Get ready for buxom babes, beastmen and giant mechs as only GAINAX can provide them!"

- Taken word for word from the back cover of the DVD. :p

Gurren Lagann is a awesome serious. I haven't seen a whole lot of it, but let me put it this way: After only seeing two episodes, I spent $20 to buy the JAPANESE DVD. I never buy the Japanese DVD for anything -- so this is my way of proving how much faith I have in this being an AWESOME series.

It's got the same kind of comedic feel of FLCL, but with a good drama feel to it as well. =3

If you want to watch, the subtitled episodes can be found on YouTube or AnimeSquish, the Japanese DVD is available for sale from Best Buy, and the English Dub airs every Monday on Sci-Fi Channel at 11PM EST.

o.O How did I not notice this topic before? :heh:

Anywho, Gurren Lagann is indeed an awesome series! And the art style and character designs are phenomenal. Also, I think the animation is pretty smooth and expressive in its movement. The series is true eye candy especially when Yoko is around! And I love how colorful the personalities of the characters are. :)

This series is quite a ride and I'm glad to see you've come on board, GS! :D

stuff

This post actually reminded me that this show was on tonight. Thanks for that, CPoC! :heh:

Anyways, yes, this series is pretty good (though beyond the episodes being shown tonight, I think I've only seen one more). Too much fan-service (seriously, no one seems to wear any clothes ever; at least in the first 5 episodes XD ), but quite hilarious.

It'd be nice if there weren't commercials every 5 minutes on this Sci-Fi channel airing, though.

VERY MINOR SPOILER
That doesn't change much throughout the entire series. Kamina never wears shirt (well... no, he doesn't really ever wear one).

Anyway, I love Gurren Lagann. I love Yoko. She's so cool. And Kamina is full of win at all times.

I never really thought about it before, but Simon doesn't wear a shirt, either! :heh:

I assume their planet is hot. I mean, it looks desert-ish. Maybe they have to not-wear-shirts to stay cool? Or something.

Anyway, if you thought the fan service in 1-5 was too much, wait till you see 6. XD

Anyway, now to speak of characters!

Yoko's awesomeness cannot be summed up in words. ^_^ Seriously, I adore her.

And Kamina is a eternally-optimistic, loud-mouthed, sword-wielding idiot. In case you've never noticed from RPs/stories/ect, that's my all-time favorite type of character. XD

... I missed tonights episodes. ;_; I would be crushed, but I already watched them in Japanese on the DVD.

I still feel blue. Maybe I'll go watch 8 & 9 now. I still haven't seen those. CURSE MY AC BREAKING. >_<

Kimiko - August 5, 2008 07:34 PM (GMT)
WATCH 8&9, SAMA. They are important. =D But they might not make you feel less blue.

Simon actually DOES where a shirt, very briefly, at one point in the series. Yoko does, too.

And I think the surface looks desert-ish because no one lives on it. XD I can't figure out WHAT the climate there, is. Some people are cover from head-to-toe (Viral), and then we have Kamina who parades shirtless with a cape and flip-flops. Then there's Yoko who wheres a bikini top and a SCARF. A SCARF.

And YA, they might as well re-name episode 6 "Fan service, Aniki!"

GoldenSama - August 5, 2008 08:51 PM (GMT)
Important? o.O Like, finding a new Mehca, Important?

... Wait, though, they won't make me less blue? So something bad happens? AH! GURREN, DON'T BLOW UP! Nooooooo. Cool talking robots can't be defeated. >_< Or maybe one of their buddies will get captured.

A scarf and a bikini top? Why, that's a contradiction! If I pound on my table, yell and point at people maybe something good will happen!

... Nope. Just got me a weird look. XD

Just watch them! You will understand when you do.

She's also wearing boots and really long socks. YOU MAKES NO SENSE, YOKO. D: But she's so cool.

I'm not sure what you're referring to as far as Simon goes, but for Yoko you're referring to that teacher outfit?

Indeed, but it all looks good, so I don't mind. :heh:

But in all seriousness, the climate IS hard to figure when you think about how oddly everyone's dressed. o.O

Though, Viral isn't human, so maybe that accounts for something, too?

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Simon wears a shirt during the first few episodes of the time skip. He quickly goes back to not wearing one later on, though. And yes, I was referring to Yomako. ;)
SPOILER OVER SPOILER OVER

And yes, I think we can all agree that Yoko needs not conform to sense with her wardrobe, since she's awesome anyway which is why my GL PhotoBucket folder is 90% Yoko Icons.
