Title: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Description: Scarab healed your wounds!

Dark Phazon - August 30, 2006 12:16 AM (GMT)
Recently, I've decided to check out this series, especially since it's gained quite a large following at another forum I read through a lot. And this series, though quite insane at many points, as well as being slow at some points (read: the long periods of zero action in Episode 9/chron-14). But, there's just something about it that's quite charming, and it is very very funny, and really made me want to watch more.

Quick summary/introduction quoted from the thread at the place that got me curious about the series:

QUOTE ("Fallen Angel")
This is Haruhi Suzumiya.

user posted image

She is a girl who believes in things like aliens, espers, and time travellers.  Also, she tends to kick everyones a** at pretty much everything, however, these things tend to bore her very quickly.

This is Kyon (thats his nickname anyway).

user posted image

He is just a normal guy who grew out of believing in things like aliens, espers, and time travellers.  One day in his new high school he meets this strange girl named Haruhi and things begin to get interesting.

This anime is a comedy/fantasy/sci-fi show of insanity.  Watch the first episode and you will get an idea of how crazy this show is going to be.

If you just want to watch the series, check through this guy's videos (episodes 1-12 are on those last two pages of his/her videos, and episodes 13 and 14 are on various other pages of his/her list of videos). And if you can get stuff via torrents, the series can be found here.

Things to note about the series: The episodes are purposely aired out of chronological order (as in, episode 1 is chronologically the 11th episode of the series). I would recommend watching it at first the way the episodes were numerically released for the full effect of the series.

So yeah, I made this wondering if anyone else here has watched this series, and to recommend this series to anyone who'd want to watch some new/different anime stuff.

PS: The credits sequence of this series is easily the most entertaining credits I've ever seen (and is also where I got the dancing animation I previously had in my sig, from).

GoldenSama - August 30, 2006 12:19 AM (GMT)
Sounds cool, I'll watch it, sure!

Clown Prince of Crime - October 10, 2006 06:44 PM (GMT)
I've heard of this. I might watch it sometime... but in the meantime...

EDIT 1: HOLY RIGATONI!! This show was AWESOME!! I just recently got done watching all 14 episodes... geez, this is the BEST SHOW I've EVER SEEN! It's entertaining and also very philosophical. And Haruhi is such an interesting character. And Kyon is a character that I can relate to... usually, in a lot of anime, the main guy character is either a pervert, a jerk, or a genophobic stick-in-the-mud... or somehow a mixture of them. But this guy is actually normal, and despite being a show about the supernatural, this all seems so... real life to me. This was awesome, and I definitely say that anyone and everyone should watch it!

EDIT 2: O_O

HARUHI IS COMING TO DVD HERE IN AMERICA!!!!!!

Awesome! ^^ I'd like to watch this, so that's good news for me.

Dark Phazon - March 9, 2007 01:06 AM (GMT)
I've had links about this US release in my sig since the end of december...

But GS, you could always watch them on youtube at the youtube link in my first post (just look through his gallery for videos with names that look like a letter-jumbled version of the title), unless you don't like youtube (and I know that feeling, because I used to really hate it, before about a year ago, because it never liked working well for me before then).

Also also, for occasional laughs (as well as to see if a site update or new video may be coming), look at the ASOS Brigade website's Page Source for hidden messages, as well as highlight the normal page to find various random hidden messages.

GoldenSama - March 9, 2007 01:30 AM (GMT)
I know! Between you, Kimi and Spoony all liking this is the main reason I want to see it.

Youtube? Yeah, I could do that. I like Youtube. 'cept for when they remove stuff on accounta the evil google overlords.

Clown Prince of Crime - March 17, 2007 12:35 AM (GMT)
Wow... just saw a preview of the dub of Haruhi Suzumiya, and I must say, I think they did a pretty good job. Particularly, I was VERY surprised at how accurate Mikuru's voice is! O_O

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtGYqqTcKn0

Btw... lots of connections between Dub Haruhi and Power Rangers.

1) It's being dubbed by Bandai... which also produces Power Ranger toys.

2) In those live-action segments, they have the Pink Space Ranger playing Haruhi.

3) In the dub, the voice of Haruhi is also the voice of Scorpina.

4) In the dub, the voice of Koizumi is... LOVE AND PEACE!!

Dark Phazon - March 17, 2007 01:32 AM (GMT)
Even better is that the voice of Kyon isone of my most favorite of VAs, the voice of:

Straight Cougar
Alucard
Itachi Uchiha
The only un-cybernetic/natural guy on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Holland
Albedo
The guy who kinda looks like The Joker in "The Big O"
And other cool characters

...

Bosch doesn't fit Koizumi at all, but he's still better than most of the other guys they had up on the website to vote on... Though I also agree with what the ASOS site had up a couple days ago, in saying that the cat's voice is horrible (though that's quite unimportant, actually).

Also of note, check out the ASOS site for the first english trailer!

Clown Prince of Crime - March 17, 2007 03:39 AM (GMT)
I believe that Big O character you're referring to is named Alan Gabriel. Anywho, that's a pretty awesome trailer! Well, I'm definitely gonna try to get that over-sized box thing when this comes out! Back when I saw the Haruhi fansubs, I got totally obsessed with the series, so having that collector's box is a must for me! ^_^

And ya, the cat's voice is horrid, but considering that he only has one line in the entire series (which is what was heard in that preview on YouTube), it really doesn't matter.

Dark Phazon - May 29, 2007 01:06 AM (GMT)
Hyper-bump, but the Volume 1 DVDs are supposed to officially be released tommorow!

...

As I stated in Chatty Chat, today I have bought the THoHS volume 1 DVD (special collectors edition, too, meaning I have the Hare Hare Yukai single, the Haruhi headband thing {I guess?} , the Haruhi-ism T-shirt iron-on, a plastic thing with two pictures on it, and the big ol box to put in the future DVDs and CDs in), getting a hold of it a little early because I reserved it. And now I'm here to hopefully help tell you all how good the dub is, compared to the Japanese version (though, you should buy at least the regular edition anyway, because this anime is complete awesomeness).

First up, my comments as I watched the first episode (which is chronologically the 11th, but first for both the US DVD and the Japanese broadcast order), as I watch through the episode in English!
  • I don't know about others, since I'm biased towards liking Crispin Freeman as a VA, but I think Freeman's pretty good as Kyon.
  • wow, Mikuru's VA's perfect.
  • awesomely bad acting. Perfect, and hillarious!!!
  • don't like Koizumi's voice... Ichigo =/= blankly staring Koizumi
  • Tsuruya
  • yeah, Kyon's VA is perfect! XD
  • "Halfway point... Hold on... We're only halfway through this thing??"
  • Koizumi's such an awful over-actor it's funny (not talking about anything but the character Koizumi, himself)
  • "And the two of them are now back to pretending to be the battle waitress and the alien magician engaging in really lame fight scenes. As for what's going to happen next, even I... the cameraman... don't know the answer. It's a fight to the death... that completely lacks any sense of excitement."
  • Monotone Tsuruya: "Why. the. long. face. Mikuru? Is. another. creepy. old. geezer. stalking. you. or. did. your doctor. tell you. you've. got. athlete's foot?" XD XD XD
  • Curses...
  • And it's over

Yeah, the English VA's are good, and the translation seems to have kept the character of everything. Overall, I'd give it a 97/100 (I just wish Koizumi's voice was different, and the normal edition DVDs would have been in broadcast order). This is awesome.

Kimiko - May 29, 2007 02:24 AM (GMT)
XD ! Man... athlete's foot... Episode 00 must be EXCELLENT! (*air guitar*)

I'll rush to the video store this week to purchase this DVD, for sure!!! :D Nyoro.

Clown Prince of Crime - May 30, 2007 07:46 PM (GMT)
If I wasn't dead broke right now due to pouring my money into an oncoming trip I'm going to have to take, I would have this in my possession right now as well. ^_^;

I heard Mikuru's English voice before, myself, though... it's weird how she sounds almost exactly like the Japanese Mikuru! O.O

EDIT: Oh, ya, I've been meaning to ask... can anyone explain to me why the cat was really talking in Episode 00? It's always bugged me that I could NOT figure it out!

Oh, ya, in other news, if you haven't already heard about it in Chatty-Chat... Haruhi is said to be getting a second season/series. Yes! Hmmm... perhaps that is the reason I've had Haruhi-ism in my blood as of late? I certainly have been on a Haruhi drawing tangent lately, anyway.

But, ya... back to my question. Cat. Talking. Anyone?

Dark Phazon - July 28, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
Same reason Mikuru shot a real "Mikuru Beam" earlier in that episode (which was why Yuki tackled Mikuru at that point; which is why Haruhi was heard complaining about her tackling of Mikuru, as that was not in the script): Because Haruhi wanted something interesting like that to happen.

There were other things that also happened abnormally in that episode, but I don't really remember them because they're more "normal" sort of things to see, but it's all probobly on the SOS-dan wiki (as that's where I think I read about this in the first place).

Kimiko - July 28, 2007 04:39 PM (GMT)
The talking cat? Um, I know in one chapter of the original novel, there was a chapter about finding the cat, but maybe it came before the taping of Episode 00 in the book but not in the anime, and then the script called for the cat and they just put him there with no explaination... um...

I don't know the whole story on the talking cat. Makes about as much sense as anything else in this show. XD

Dark Phazon - July 28, 2007 06:13 PM (GMT)
The "Adventures of Mikuru Ashahina" video was made actually quite late in the series timeline of what has been animated so far (chronologically, it should be episode 11 of the 14 made), which is after when the episodes relating to the first book were (which would have been the first, chronologically, 6 episodes, at least). So, the finding and adopting of Shamisen was probobly just not animated.

And for all you bums who still haven't gotten around to watching this brilliantly hilarious and awesome series, and don't want to buy something without knowing what it is first... You will have to click the "more..." at the bottom of the "videos in this series" thing to get the links for the first episodes. They're numbered in broadcast order, which is DEFINITELY the order you should watch the series in. And buy the DVDs if you like it and have money; the dub is good, the DVDs have quite a bit of interesting stuff on them, and if sales are good, the second season will probobly make its way to the US, too.

QFT

As for the cat... now I understand. So in the novel, he was adopted, therefor it's possible that he was never really a normal cat to begin with, but rather an "interesting" cat that Haruhi would have wanted to exist in the real world. Hmmm... that's too bad that never got animated. Though now I wonder how much was skipped in the anime, and whether or not we'll ever get EVERY chapter from the novel series animated, even though the timeline has already been skewered (though that might not matter since things were never in chronological order to begin with).

As for the dub... it really is a lot better than I was expecting, once I got to see it. I already knew Mikuru was great, but I was always a bit iffy on the little bit I heard of Haruhi herself. However, when I actually started seeing the episodes, I must say that voice really does suit her well. In the end, all the voices were fantastic, not a single one was bad to my ears... well, I didn't care too much for the cat's voice, but other than that, the dub was perfect. Hmmm... heh, the cat's voice... funny, I didn't plan for my ramblings to come back full circle. XD

At least half-to-three-quarters of the posts in this thread have been about the english dub

GS!!! PAY ATTENTION TO THE LINK KIMIKO POSTED!!

They might last on youtube long enough to watch through them all. If not, someone else will likely load them up on one of the video sites, because this series is very popular, and that's what happens with popular series. So if they get deleted from that place that's linked, just search veoh or dailymotion or youtube for the series title, and you'll probobly find some episodes within the results.
