Disgaea is a Tactical Role-Playing Video Game for the Playstation 2 Entertainment System. The game, while virtually impossible to find in the United States, was popular enough in Japan to spawn a anime and a manga based on it. There's also a much-more common to find sequel, Disgaea 2.

Disgaea is the story of Laharl, the son of King Krichevskoy. King Krichevskoy was the ruler of the Netherworld -- a underworld-like kingdom full of demons. Laharl was asleep in a coffin for two years, and awakens to discover his father is dead and most of his servants have now abandoned him and forgotten who he is.

The only one seemingly around is Etna, the demon girl who serves as the leader for a group of explosive demon penguines known as "The Prinny Squad."

He finds out that, now that he's back, every demon in the Netherworld wants to kill him so they can instantly become Overlord. He and Etna set off to defeat all of them so he can become Overlord. Soon he meets a young Angel in Training named Flonne who was sent to kill King Krichevskoy.

Of course, the king has been dead for two years. She decides to take Krichevskoy's place as Laharl's father in order to prove that demons can feel love and to teach him what it is. She's called a 'Love Freak' because of it.

Along the way to defeat all those who seek to be Overlord, they meet a guy named Vyers, who calls himself "The Dark Adonis" but they refer to him as "Mid-Boss", because he's not very scary and they see him only as a midboss and not a real threat. (It was original a video game... and a very funny one, I hear!)

I've never played the game, because I lost the eBay auction and I have no money to try again. >_> But I did recently get the entire manga thanks to the beloved invention called the "internet". It's a series of tubes! Everyone should have an internet!

Anyway... Disgaea is a awesome manga, and as soon as I have the cash to do so, I'll be hitting eBay for the game. ^^ So I made a thread.

The anime, for the bit I could watch before youtube deleted the episodes, was pretty decent, though more suited for younger viewers (also, there was more fight scene-like action in the opening than in all the episodes I was able to watch, combined). Still pretty entertaining, though. Also makes me wish I actually had the time to play a huge long strategy RPG, but I don't (unless they threw it on a portable system like the DS or something).

Also, Disgaea 1 has been rereleased! I don't know how easy it is to find in stores, but it is at least here. Pretty cheap, too...

I haven't seen the anime, but I know there's always differences in all three. Like in the anime the first person Laharl meets is Flonne, and he's trying to get to his castle... while in the manga, Laharl is already in the castle and is awoken by Etna.
